Die Veranstaltung bietet aus zeitgeschichtlicher Perspektive eine Einführung in die jüngere Geschichte Lateinamerikas seit 1898. Der Verlust der letzten verbliebenen spanischen Besitzungen in der Karibik, der einhergeht mit dem Beginn des American Empire, ist Ausgangspunkt dieser Betrachtung. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Stationen der Geschichte Lateinamerikas wie die Mexikanische oder Kubanische Revolution, die Militärjuntas in Südamerika der 1970er Jahre oder der Aufstieg neuer indigener Bewegungen seit den 1990er Jahren.
Neben Vorlesungselementen und Textbesprechungen werden zu den einzelnen Themen Schlüsselquellen gemeinsam diskutiert und anschließend in die sich im Aufbau befindende Audio-Sammlung mit Analyse zentraler Quellen der Geschichte der Amerikas integriert.
