Die Veranstaltung befasst sich mit den tiefen gesellschaftlichen Umbrüchen, die Europa und die USA seit den 1880er Jahren erlebten. Dabei stehen Revolutionen und gewaltame Proteste des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts im Vordergrund. Während Konzepte zu Revolutionen und gesellschaftlichen Umbrüchen zumeist in sozial- und politikwissenschaftlichen Studien diskutiert wurden, hat die Labour History zahlreiche anregende Fallstudien geliefert.

In der Verstaltung werden zum einen Möglichkeiten und Grenzen theoretisch-systematischer Zugriffe auf Revolutionen und gesellschaftliche Umbrüche diskutiert. Zum anderen geht es darum, an konkreten Beispielen zu zeigen, wie solche Konzepte für quellenbasierte Forschungen genutzt werden können. Die Entwicklung und Operationalisierung geschichtswissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen können so an Fallbeispielen erprobt werden.

Die Lektüre englischsprachiger Texte und Quellen wird in der Veranstaltung großen Raum einnehmen.
