Im Unterschied zur Allgemeinen Soziologischen Theorie mit universalem Geltungsanspruch (z. B. Talcott Parsons, Niklas Luhmann) versteht sich soziologische Zeitdiagnostik als ‘‘Theorie der Gegenwart‘‘. Gegenwart wird dabei zum einen als geschichtlich geworden, zum anderen – im Unterschied zur Geschichtswissenschaft, die in der Regel über abgeschlossene Vergangenheit forscht – als zukunftsoffen betrachtet. Es geht darum, die Eigenart von Gegenwartslagen, nicht ihre universalen Aspekte, zu beachten. Krisenwahrnehmung und Krisenbewusstsein bilden den Nährboden, auf dem soziologische Zeitdiagnostik gedeiht.
Im Seminar sollen soziologische Zeitdiagnosen vom frühen 19. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart behandelt werden. Übergreifend geht es auch um soziologische Zeitdiagnosen als sozialwissenschaftliche Kategorie.
