Das Konzept des Doing Gender ist aus der interaktionstheoretischen Soziologie hervorgegangen und beschreibt die aktive Konstruktion von Geschlecht durch Interaktion. Es schärft den Blick für eine Analyse der alltäglichen interaktiven Praktiken in Form von Gestik, Mimik, Sprache, Körperhaltung etc., durch die das soziale Geschlecht in routinierter Weise permanent reproduziert wird. Erweitert wurde es um das Konzept des Doing Difference (West/Fenstermaker), um der Intersektion von gender, race und class als Dimensionen sozialer Ungleichheit Rechnung zu tragen.
Das Seminar ist zweiteilig aufgebaut: Im ersten Seminarteil erschließen wir uns durch Literaturarbeit die wesentlichen theoretischen Grundlagen des Doing Gender (Goffman; Garfinkel; West und Zimmerman u.a.). Im zweiten Teil spüren wir durch Analyse von Werbematerial, Liedtexten, Filmausschnitten etc. auf, wie Geschlecht hergestellt wird – und wie ein Undoing Gender (Hirschauer) aussehen kann.
Vorausgesetzt wird die Bereitschaft, sich in komplexe, deutsch- und englischsprachige Texte einzuarbeiten und aktiv an Diskussionen und Gruppenarbeiten teilzunehmen.
Das Seminar ist als Einführung konzipiert und richtet sich daher an Studierende mit keinen oder wenigen Vorkenntnissen in Geschlechterforschung.
