Die Kunst ist frei, heißt es im Grundgesetz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Absatz 5. Das geht gedanklich auf eine Stelle in Schillers "Briefen Über die ästhetische Erziehung des Menschen" (1795) zurück. Auch sonst ist der Gedanke der Kunstfreiheit eng mit Schiller, mit seiner Elegie "Die Götter Griechenlands" (1788) und seinem Kallias-Briefwechsel mit Christian Gottfried Körner /1792/93) verbunden. Dabei gibt es begrifflich, sprachlich und konzeptuell bei Schiller ein großes Spektrum an Auffassungen von ästhetischer Autonomie. Wie lässt sich beispielsweise die Vorstellung einer zweckfreien Kunst mit dem Anspruch einer ästhetischen Erziehung verbinden? Wir lesen die Briefe im Kontext prägnanter Auszüge aus literarischen und theoretischen Texten Friedrich Schillers und fragen nach dem Ideal einer Freiheit der Kunst zur Zeit der Französischen Revolution sowie in unserer Gegenwart.

Anzuschaffen sind die Briefe über die ästhetische Erziehung des Menschen bei Reclam. Neu 8,40 Euro oder gebraucht 3,45 Euro. Empfehlenswert ist auch die Hofenberg Sonderausgabe, aber Reclam genügt vollkommen.
