300251 Research on Inequalities within and across Families in Practice (Teil II) (LEH) (WiSe 2017/2018)

Contents, comment

During the first half of the course theoretical issues concerning research in the field of family and inequality sociology will be discussed. Research designs in general and in particular to tackle issues on inequalities in the family context will be introduced. Students will develop their own research questions and formulate hypotheses. Typical questions include how parental characteristics and behaviors are associated with children’s attainment and well-being and to what extent siblings resemble each other in terms of cognitive and socio-emotional development.
In the second part participants learn how to manage TwinLife data, how to test their research hypotheses and perform and present (descriptive) analyses. The course provides an in-depth introduction into the management and analysis of complex family data. The participants will be introduced to the German Twin Family Panel (TwinLife) and learn how to handle and analyze this data via the statistical program stata.
