Insbesondere für die soziologische Klassik lässt sich sagen, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit Religion und die Entwicklung der allgemeinen soziologischen Theorie in enger Kopplung stehen. Dies gilt für Weber und Durkheim, aber auch noch darüber hinaus. Die Veranstaltung fragt, welche besondere Rolle Religion in soziologischen Theorien spielt und welche wechselseitigen Impulse die Religionssoziologie und die soziologische Theorie verbinden. Dies wird bis zu neueren Ansätzen wie beispielsweise der Interpretation der Religion als rationalem Wahlverhalten verfolgt.
