This course will focus on the rise of popular music in the English-speaking world after 1945. Special attention will be paid to the political and cultural impact of particular musical movements. Through listening, discussion, and writing students will examine the implications of the music we listen to. Topics include (subject to change)
• The rise of punk music in the 1970s
• The two-tone movement and its impact on race relations
• The influence of David Bowie
• Fan culture
• Elvis Presley and the loss of innocence in the 1950s
• The emergence of rap and hip hop in the 1980s
• Drug imagery in popular music
• Songs of protest and demonstration
• Auto-tune and the commoditization of music
• Sexual and gender identity in music
• National identity in popular music
• English music in the non-English world: music as a lingua franca
