The question if a sentence is grammatical or not can hardly be answered
by learners' grammars of languages. Sentences such as "Colourless green
ideas sleep furiously!" can hardly be found in a traditional grammar
book. Based on which criteria is it possible to decide if such a
sentence should not be correct?
This class differs form practical grammar classes in introducing
techniques for using linguistic theories and models in order to derive
explanations for problems in grammar. This class will from the
generative perspective introduce regular grammars, context free
grammars, etc. approaching the Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar
(HPSG). The class will be based on syntactic theory, with a practical
introduction to the formal problems of syntax.
To prepare for this class it is recommended to revise the sections on
syntax from the introduction to linguistics. A text book will be recommended.
