This seminar uses jazz as trope and paradigm to reach a deeper understanding of American literature(s) and culture(s). We will draw upon an interdisciplinary approach to jazz as both musical expression and theoretical paradigm. We will explore the presence of jazz in American culture(s) by looking at representation(s) of jazz in film, television series, painting, photography and literary texts. Robert O'Meally's compilation of essays The Jazz Cadence of American Culture will function as our major textbook.
