Departing from Wallace Stevens' poem "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird", we will engage with a broad spectrum of literary theory and criticism and apply different theoretical approaches to the reading of selected literary texts. Lois Tyson's Critical Theory Today: A User-Friendly Guide (1999) will function as major textbook to introduce students to reader-response, structuralist, deconstructivist and new historical criticism. We will make pragmatic use of various theoretical approaches looking at Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby as our major literary text.
