Unter allen Epochen der deutschen Literaturgeschichte genießt die (Weimarer) Klassik einen Sonderstatus. Einerseits ist sie eine Periode wie alle anderen auch, andererseits gilt sie als Maßstäbe setzender Höhepunkt. Nun handelt es sich bei dieser zwischen Historizität und Normativität schwankenden Epochenkonzeption wesentlich um einen Effekt der Rezeption besonders im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Mit Blick auf diese Klassik-Konstruktionen sollen ausgewählte Texte von Goethe und Schiller auf ihren Beitrag zu diesen Konzeptionen befragt werden. Wie sah das Selbstverständnis unserer "Klassiker" aus? Wovon haben sie sich abgegrenzt? Wie haben sie sich auf dem literarischen Feld positioniert?
