Introduction to Interamerican Studies: America in its Center — Central America as an Interamerican Space In-Between

Los Estudios Interamericanos son estudios de área interdisciplinarios que tienen como objeto de investigación el continente americano como un todo. El tema es la pluralidad y la diversidad americanas. Sin embargo, lo singular es que los Estudios Interamericanos también se destacan por una metodología singular, que consiste en enfocar específicamente las interrelaciones, los cruces y los conflictos entre las culturas y las sociedades. Se tiene en cuenta que no solo las personas se mueven (flujos migratorios) sino que las sociedades se encuentran en procesos de comunicación (flujos mediáticos, informacionales y artísticos) y de interacción (políticas transnacionales). Evidentemente, las cuestiones de poder y de violencia son sobresalientes, ya que tales entrelazamientos no son necesariamente pacíficos. En suma, sociedad y cultura son conceptos que no designan bloques consolidados sino procesos en transformación.
En el curso, el tema particular es Centroamérica. Se trata de discutir e investigar la región como el entre-espacio interamericano por excelencia: América Central no solo divide al Norte y al Sur, así como al Caribe y al Pacífico. También es un espacio en que las Américas del Norte y del Sur intervienen y los océanos se comunican. Al mismo tiempo, esa inmensa zona de contacto en el centro se distingue del resto del continente, es diversa en sí y tiene su propria historia plural.
Introduction to Interamerican Studies: America in its Center — Central America as an Interamerican In-Between Space
InterAmerican Studies are interdisciplinary area studies, which aim to examine the American continent as a whole. The topic is plurality and American diversity. However, a singular feature of Inter-American Studies is its unique methodology, which consists in focusing specifically in the interrelationships, crossings and conflicts between cultures and societies. It takes into account that not only people move (migration flows) but societies as a whole are involved in communication processes (media, informational and artistic flows) as well as in interaction processes (transnational policies). Clearly, issues of power and violence are prominent, since such entanglements are not necessarily taking place peacefully. In sum, society and culture are concepts that do not designate consolidated blocks but transformation processes. In this course, the particular issue is Central America. The region will be discussed and researched as the interamerican in-between space par excellence: Central America not only divides the North from the South, but also the Caribbean from the Pacific. It is also a space of entanglements in the Americas. At the same time, that huge contact area in the center differs from the rest of the continent, it is quite diverse and it has its own plural history.
