Die Vorlesung behandelt die europäische Geschichte vom Frühmittelalter bis zum 15. Jahrhundert. Ausgehend von Problemen der Konstruktion der Epoche, die man Mittelalter nennt, werden die einzelnen zeitlichen und räumlichen Binnendifferenzierungen erläutert und diskutiert. Neben einem chronologischen Abriss der Geschichte wird der Schwerpunkt der Veranstaltung auf einer Darstellung der grundlegenden Gesellschaftsstrukturen und deren Veränderung liegen. Themen sind: Grundherrschaft und Dorfbildung; Lehnswesen, Adels- und Königsherrschaft; Kaiser- und Papsttum; Kirche, Ordenswesen und Kreuzzüge; Frömmigkeit und Bildung; Städtewesen und Handel; Ausbildung der Landesherrschaft. Fragen der Methode und des theoriegeleiteten Forschens sollen an zeitgenössischem Bild- und Textmaterial erörtert und vorgestellt werden.
