Die Vorlesung geht der Frage nach, welche Rolle das Streben nach "Seemacht" in der Geschichte der Antike spielte. Ausgehend von der Analyse der geographischen, ökologischen und technischen Rahmenbedingungen werden die wesentlichen Ansätze zur maritimen Herrschaftsbildungen von der mykenischen Zeit bis in die Spätantike behandelt und in den jeweiligen historischen Kontext eingeordnet. Nicht zuletzt sollen damit auch epochenübergreifende Vergleichsmöglichkeiten erschlossen werden.
