230534 Teaching Postcolonial Short Stories (GymGe & HRGe) (S) (WiSe 2016/2017)

Contents, comment

In this class, you will discuss post-colonial short stories in their school-canonical context, together with extant didactic material accompanying them. Our common target is to develop an understanding of these stories (beginning with Joseph Conrad’s “Outpost of Progress”, ending with Hanif Kureishi’s “My Son the Fanatic”) both in their progressive historical and cultural context, and their applicability to current educational questions in EFL. In the course of this class, you will particularly discuss, compare and apply different methodical approaches to short stories and teaching prose literature, and consider possible ways to plan and organize thematic units and individual classroom sessions.
