This seminar explores the strongly debated topic of immigration with regard to fundamental changes in family structure, belonging, and identity formation processes in Latina/o and Asian communities in the United States through an intense study of selected literary texts (e.g. by Danticat, Alvarez, Cruz, Cisneros, Tan). Along the way, we will examine theoretical concepts such as ‘transnationalism’/ ‘transculturalism’ / ‘biculturalism’ – key terms that help us assume a critical and insightful perspective for the reading of the texts. In turn, the richness and density that a literary work can provide for its reader will illuminate current trends such as ‘transnational motherhood’ in much detail.
