In this seminar we will explore the policies and practices that affect the use and position of global English alongside other languages in a range of contexts. This will include the discussion of issues such as the role English plays in shaping migratory patterns, the influence of the English teaching and publishing industries, and the dominance of English in the global media. This will allow students to access some theoretical concepts, such as linguicide or linguistic ecology, but may also give them an understanding of the roles that English and other languages play as people mediate relationships of conflict, competition, and co-existence in a globalised world.
