This course offers a comparative overview of basic morphosyntactic structures of two genetically unrelated languages: Yorùbá (a Benue-Congo language of West Africa) and German. To do this, the course compares topics such as word order and clausal structures, negative and aspectual marking, question formation, topic and focus constructions, verb serialization, among others, in the two languages.
The course is designed for students who are interested in the comparative study of the syntax of different languages. The course does not require any prior knowledge of the languages under study. All that is required is students' enthusiasm for working on a new language, as well as a basic background in syntax.
