Das Seminar behandelt Prozesse der Migration als Teil der deutschen Geschichte und Gegenwart vom 19. Jahrhundert bis heute. Es vermittelt Überblickswissen über Migrationsprozesse und führt in Begriffe, Themen und Fragestellungen der interdisziplinären Migrationsforschung ein.
In der ersten Semesterhälfte beschäftigt sich das Seminar mit Aus- und Einwanderung, Flucht und Vertreibung im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Die zweite Semesterhälfte widmet sich der bundesrepublikanischen Gegenwart. Dabei geht es um Prozesse der Integration, Exklusion und Ethnisierung. Die letzten drei Sitzungen widmen sich der Frage der Bedeutung von Migration als Gegenstand der historischen Erinnerung und der schulischen Geschichtsvermittlung im Einwanderungsland Deutschland.
