Die Säulen der Antike stützen auch die deutsche Literatur des Mittelalters: Mit eigenen Schwerpunkt- und Akzentsetzungen, die über bloßes Übersetzen weit hinausgehen, adaptiert sie die Stoffe, Texte und Figuren, die die Antike bereitstellt. Das Seminar bearbeitet eine Auswahl von Texten, anhand derer die Spezifika der Aneignungs- und Transformationsprozesse fassbar werden sollen. Für diesen Zugriff ist es notwendig, einige Sitzungen des Seminars komparatistisch anzulegen, da die Vergleichsgrößen nahezu ausschließlich lateinische Texte darstellen. Diese werden immer durch eine vorhandene Übersetzung erschlossen. Lateinkenntnisse sind erwünscht, aber nicht erforderlich.
