220118 Heiligkeit im Kontext: Viten, Predigten und Praktiken in der historischen Analyse (S) (WiSe 2026/2027)

Was bedeutet es im Mittelalter, heilig zu sein oder zu werden? Das Seminar untersucht mittelalterliche Vorstellungen und Praktiken von Heiligkeit anhand unterschiedlicher Quellen – insbesondere Heiligenviten, Predigten und Berichten über religiöse Praktiken. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie Heiligkeit in konkreten historischen Kontexten entworfen, kommuniziert und praktiziert wurde.
Dabei werden Heiligenviten nicht nur als Erzählungen über außergewöhnliche Personen, sondern als Deutungen und Modelle von Heiligkeit gelesen. Predigten und religiöse Praktiken zeigen, wie solche Vorstellungen in konkrete Kommunikations- und Handlungssituationen übersetzt wurden. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem mittelalterlichen Mönchtum und seinem Ideal der Selbstheiligung: Wie sollte ein religiöses Leben zur eigenen Vervollkommnung führen, und welche Rolle spielten dabei Askese, Gebet, Gemeinschaft, Fürsorge und andere Praktiken?
An ausgewählten Beispielen wird untersucht, welche unterschiedlichen Wege das Mittelalter kannte, Heiligkeit zu denken, zu erlangen und für andere sichtbar und erfahrbar zu machen. Ergänzend ist ein Besuch im Kloster Dalheim geplant, bei dem die Studierenden Einblicke in die Geschichte und materielle Überlieferung eines Klosters erhalten. Darüber hinaus sollen Originale aus dem Archiv betrachtet und damit mittelalterliche Quellen nicht nur als Texte, sondern auch als materielle Objekte kennengelernt werden.
