392269 Project: Are Emojis a Universal Emotional Language? Examining Emoji Comprehension, Facial Expression Recognition, and Their Role in Real-Time Communication (Pj) (WiSe 2026/2027)

Depending on the number of students and the project scope, the project can also include:
• Comparison of emoji interpretation and facial expression recognition accuracy
• Analysis of cross-cultural and demographic differences in emoji understanding
• Design and implementation of a chat-based experimental setup
• Evaluation of emotional clarity in text-only vs. text+emoji communication

Upon completion of this project, we will work hand in hand to publish the results in a well-established conference or journal in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI).

Requirements for participation, required level

• Good programming skills in Python (or experience with survey/experiment tools)
• Basic knowledge of data analysis and statistics
• Interest in human–computer interaction, communication, or psychology
• (Preferably) experience with user studies or experimental design
