230283 Cognitive models of language production (S) (WiSe 2026/2027)

Contents, comment

Psycholinguistic research on language production broadly agrees on the basic cognitive architecture of the production system: conceptualization, the stage at which speakers plan the message they want to express; formulation, the stage at which this message is linguistically encoded; articulation; and self-monitoring, the subsystem responsible for detecting errors and initiating self-repairs. However, a closer look at the subprocesses involved in mapping “ideas onto sounds” reveals substantially different theoretical accounts, each grounded in specific experimental findings. In this seminar, we will begin with highly influential discrete-serial models of language production, contrast them with interactive models, and finally discuss more recent forward-modeling approaches.

Since the seminar also addresses how models of language production relate to neural constraints and, in some cases, to explicit neural implementation, it is open to students who wish to take it as part of module 23-LIN-MaNL Advanced Topics in Neurolinguistics as well as the modules 23-LIN-MaNL1 Neuroanatomy/-physiology and 23-LIN-MaNL2 Neurocognition (the latter two discontinued at the end of winter semester 2026/2027).

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
