Molecular and metabolic characteristics of paragangliomas: steps towards personalized medicine
Abstract:
Paragangliomas are rare catecholamine-producing tumors characterized by remarkable genetic, molecular, and metabolic heterogeneity. Advances in genomic and multi-omics profiling have identified distinct transcriptional subtypes, including pseudohypoxic, kinase-signaling, and Wnt-altered clusters. Each of these is associated with specific catecholamine phenotypes and a particular clinical course. In particular, mutations affecting the succinate dehydrogenase genes (SDHx) lead to an accumulation of oncometabolites and activate pseudo-hypoxic signaling pathways, contributing to tumor progression and metastatic potential. These molecular insights are increasingly translating into clinical practice through improved risk stratification, and targeted therapeutic approaches. Improved understanding the genetic, molecular and metabolic landscape of paragangliomas therefore represents a critical step toward precision medicine and individualized treatment strategies for affected patients.

Die Vortragsreihe "Medizinische Forschung" der Medizinischen Fakultät OWL findet während des Semesters (außer in den Schulferien) mittwochs um 17:00 Uhr (Dauer: ~1 Std.) via Zoom etwa alle 14 Tage statt.
Ziel der Veranstaltung ist der Austausch und die Vernetzung von Forschenden und Interessierten in der medizinischen und medizinrelevanten Forschung. Forschende der Medizinischen Fakultät OWL, der drei Krankenhausträger des Universitätsklinikums OWL (Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel, Klinikum Bielefeld, Klinikum Lippe), des HDZ sowie in OWL niedergelassene Ärzte und Ärztinnen präsentieren aktuelle Projekte und tauschen sich dazu aus. Auch Kolleginnen anderer Fakultäten sowie nationaler und internationaler Institute sind als Redner*innen und Diskutant*innen willkommen.
