Die Epoche ‚Mittelalter‘ fasziniert Leser aller Altersklassen – historische Romane finden sich auf den Bestsellerlisten der Belletristik, die Adaptionen mittelalterlicher Stoffe und Motive erfreuen sich großer Beliebtheit.
Die Arbeit mit den lyrischen und epischen ‚Originalen‘ des deutschen Mittelalters erlaubt es Schülerinnen und Schülern, ihre literarischen Kompetenzen mit Blick auf die diachronen Entwicklungen in der Literatur- und Sprachgeschichte zu erweitern.
Einer Untersuchung der Kernlehrpläne verschiedener Schulstufen des Landes NRW und des entsprechenden Kompetenzerwerbs der Schülerinnen und Schüler zeigt zunächst die Einsatzmöglichkeiten für mittelalterliche Texte im Deutschunterricht (wie auch im fächerübergreifenden Unterricht) auf, bevor auf der Grundlage von mittelalterlicher Epik und Lyrik konkrete Beispiele für den "Einsatz" vormoderner Texte im Unterricht entwickelt werden.
