Nunavut is the largest and northernmost territory of Canada, covering a fifth of the country's entire landmass. This part of the Arctic Region is home to indigenous peoples. It is self-governed and Inuktitut, the native language of the Inuit, is the third official language. As applaudable as this is, romanticized imaginations and blatant ignorance of First Nations people have loomed large since the early days of Canadian colonization. Supposedly better off than their US-American peers, Canada's First Nations people have also been subject to racism, ostracism, forced schooling and Christianization.
Drawing on various sources, in this class we will scrutinize these peoples histories, cultures and belief systems, their stories and current situations.
