English is a global language with a huge range of interesting varieties. This seminar does not look at English from this global perspective. On the contrary, we will investigate regional varieties of English – accents and dialects – in the various corners of the British Isles. After an introduction to some issues of sociolinguistics, we describe some varieties such as Cockney, Geordie and others in more detail. We will listen to recordings and watch scenes from British films featuring local accents.
The reading for the course will be announced in the first session. There will be some reading for the kick-off meeting, which will be announced via e-mail at the beginning of the term.
Introdction to Linguistics I passed (BM3) - that's highly recommended.
Please make sure to attend the kick-off meeting.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
