For close to half a century Elizabeth I ruled over England and her eign is often considered a magnificent high point in the history and culture of the English nation. "Good Queen Bess", the virgin queen, saw to rather peaceful times and cultivated her own 'cult of love'. The Elizabethan Age was the time of such famous playwrights as Marlowe and Shakespeare, heroes at sea such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Ralegh, and the glorious defeat of the Spanish Armada. This course wants to look at some aspects of Elizabethan times, for example, culture and politics, society, courtlife, fashion, the theatre, poetry and expeditions.
