One of the most challenging obstacles a scholar today must face is the need to write
and publish in English at the highest level. To add to the difficulty, language
expectations for such works and publications are the same for native and non-native
speakers alike, often putting non-native speakers at a disadvantage., which can often
put some at a disadvantage. You have the ideas and know how to express and
formulate them in German or your native language, but you see a need to improve
your ability to do this in English.
This class focuses on writing strategies for advanced academic writing, cultural
differences in approaches to scholarly writing, style and lexis decisions. However, this
class does not focus on basic writing skills or grammar. Furthermore, since proficiency
in language at this level is most often never the same thing for everyone, this course
attempts to build upon and enhance the prior knowledge of participants to help give
everyone the confidence to write and publish in English.
