230808 English for Students of Business and Economics (S) (SoSe 2006)

Contents, comment

This class is open to students of all faculties and I place no restrictions on prospective participants, but please note that students have to be present during the first session (and the subsequent ones!).

As far as content is concerned, this course is the second part of a two-term course. It will largely concentrate on spoken English and its use in a business context, including dictations, note-taking and role-plays for phone calls or discussions. Judging from experience, the large number of participants will make individual exercises very difficult, which means that participants should be prepared to actively participate in group exercises and peer assessment.

Apart from that, the class is open to suggestions and will take into account the needs and interests of students, where possible.

To avoid frustration, I would like to point out that this class is not a basic language class. Though it aims at giving students a chance to complete their vocabulary and to practice their English, it requires the ability to communicate in English and the willingness to independently work up on gaps.

Students will be required to do occasional exercises and hand in a portfolio at the end of term for a certificate of attendance (Teilnahmebestätigung). Both this and a test at the end of the term are the requirements for language credits (Schein). Bachelor students will need to write the test if they wish to have this class counted with 2 credit points.
