English for Beginners 1b course is designed for foreign students and is a continuation of the first part that was held in the Winter Semester. The course concentrates on the four language skills which are reading, listening, writing and grammar. The course will be composed of 11 units using the book (The New Cambridge English Course, Swan and Walter 1994) and its practice book and cassettes. The course will be held 3 times a week composing 6 hours.

The topics to be covered are: differences; personal information; present and future; ordering and asking; past; getting to know others; knowing about future; telling people to do things; and predictions.

Students will learn these grammar points: the modal verb can; present progressive tense; comparative and superlative adjectives; comparative adjectives; prepositions of time; prepositions of description; present perfect tense; verbs with two objects; reported speech; sequencing and linking words; going to; will-future; adverbs of manner; paragraph structuring adverbials; and imperatives.

In addition to learning new vocabulary, students will learn to: compare; ask for and give information and opinions; describe and compare people; speculate; make and reply to requests; invite and reply; describe and speculate about activities; plan; count; telephone; borrow; suggest; agree, disagree and negotiate; invite and reply; narrate; report what people have said; ask for, give and refuse permission; show interest; distinguish level of formality; start conversations; make arrangements to meet; order in a restaurant; talk about plans; make predictions; guess; make suggestions; express sympathy; give advice; warn; announce; and raise and counter objections.

Moreover, students will learn to: talk about abilities; physical characteristics and measures; weights and measures; numbers; ages; personalities; professions; names of months; future plans; the weather; holidays; places; travel; time; food and drink; daily routines; likes and dislikes; interests and habits; careers; houses, seasons; health and illness; sports; machines; horoscopes; danger; intention; manner; and the future.

Methods of teaching will include listening exercises, video films, role plays or situations, group and pair work as well as writing activities.

Students will be evaluated according to their progress in talking, reading, writing and classroom participation. A test will be done at the end of the course for students who want to have points for attending the course.
