Ziel dieser Übung ist die quellenkritische Betrachtung deutsch- und französischsprachiger Reiseliteratur aus dem Zeitalter der Aufklärung. Dabei geht es neben wissenschaftlichen und ästhetisch-literarischen Reisebeschreibungen auch um reisetheoretische Literatur (Reisehandbücher und -anleitungen). Anhand von etwa 10 Beispielen (z.B. von Alexander von Humboldt, Georg Forster, Bougainville, Diderot, Herder und H.-B. de Saussure) sollen die Studierenden mit der Auswertung dieser Quellensorte für sozial- und kulturgeschichtliche Fragestellungen vertraut gemacht werden. Insbesondere wird uns die Frage nach der kulturellen Vorstrukturiertheit der Wahrnehmung und Beschreibung von fremden Völkern und Ländern beschäftigen.
