Das 17. Jahrhundert gilt als entscheidende Epoche in der Entwicklung der Wissenschaften, als eine Zeit, in der die Ablösung von antiken und mittelalterlichen Traditionen begann. Experimente, Instrumente und mathematische Methoden wurden zu Sinnbildern von Wissenschaftlichkeit; die Beherrschung der Natur und die Nützlichkeit der Wissenschaften wurden betont, ihre Eigenständigkeit behauptet. An die Stelle des Organismus trat die Maschine als wichtigste Metapher für Natur. Neue Rollen, Funktionen und Institutionen bildeten sich heraus. Überblicksartig angelegt, betont die Vorlesung die Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften.
