230628 Gender in US Sit-Coms (S) (SoSe 2008)

Contents, comment

We will take a diachronic as well as synchronic look at US Sit-Coms to explore the representation of gender in this media genre from the period after 1945 to the present. We will pursue a combined media and cultural studies approach to trace developments in media production, media reception and how they shape the renegotiations of gender relations in a selection of Sit-Coms ranging from I Love Lucy to contemporary productions such as Sex in the City. We will discuss in which way these developments can or cannot be seen as representative expressions of cultural and social change within US American society.
