This course attempts to map recent developments in contemporary British fiction by drawing on a variety of literary and theoretical texts. By analyzing contemporary narratives within larger contexts of aesthetic and cultural developments in the 20th century, we will touch on topics like postmodernism, historiographic metafiction, hybridity and popular entertainment.
A reader with challenging secondary literature and a selection of shorter prose texts by Julian Barnes, Kate Atkinson, Hanif Kureishi, Martin Amis, Jeanette Winterson (and others) will be made available. In addition, please buy your own copy of the following novels:
Peter Ackroyd, Chatterton (1987)
Pat Barker, Regeneration (1991)
Ian McEwan, Atonement (2001)
Three credit points will be awarded for regular attendance (1), oral presentation & response papers (1) and a final term paper (1).
