230545 Introduction to Applied Linguistics (S) (SoSe 2008)

Contents, comment

Applied Linguistics is an essential component of university level language study, bridging the field of practical use of language in authentic and didactic contexts on the one hand with the scientific study of language form and function, including conversational language, scientific language, literary language, the role of language in the electronic media, and problems of language pathology.

The content of the course includes the following topics:

  • Principles of first and second language learning phases, and bilingualism
  • Selected areas of applied linguistics: sign language, forensic linguistics, English language varieties, clinical linguistics, lexicography, and language testing

Reading will be assigned from different books, e.g.:

Gramley, S. & Pätzold, K.-M. (2004 2nd ed.) A Survey of Modern English. London: Routledge.
Yule, G. (2006) The Study of Language. CUP.

I expect students to have successfully finished "How to Handle Speech" by the time they start this class!
