Die beiden bildenden Künste Malerei und Bildhauerei werden auf vielfältige Weise von der römischen Dichtung thematisiert: Ihre realen oder fingierten Erzeugnisse werden oft minutiös beschrieben (Stichwort: Ekphrasis), es ranken sich um die realen oder fingierten Schöpfer der Kunstwerke aufschlußreiche Legenden (z.B. um Pygmalion oder Apelles) und der Schaffensprozeß von Malern und Bildhauern wird mit demjenigen von Dichtern in Parallele gesetzt (ut pictura poesis) etc.
Das interdisziplinär angelegte Seminar wendet sich ausdrücklich auch an solche Studierende der Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft, die über geringe oder gar keine Kenntnisse der lateinischen Sprache verfügen.
