Das Modul vermittelt Grundlagen zum Verständnis der molekularen Mikrobiologie, die anhand anwendungsorientierter Beispiele theoretisch und experimentell erarbeitet werden. Es werden Aspekte des klassischen und des Gen- und Genom-basierten Metabolic Engineering vermittelt. So werden die Studierenden an die physiologische Analyse z.B. von Stoffwechselmutanten herangeführt. Ebenso werden Vorgänge von Fermentationen oder der Produktion von Metaboliten charakterisiert. Darüber hinaus werden auch neue unbekannte Eigenschaften, z.B. Abbau bestimmter Substrate, auf Basis von Freilandisolaten oder existierender Genbanken (Metagenom-Analyse) gesucht und mit Hilfe modernster Diagnoseverfahren analysiert.
