Der Doktor Faust ist keine mittelalterliche Gestalt. Wenn es auch mittelalterliche Vorläufer wie den Teufelsbündner Theophilus gab und ein historischer Johann oder Georg Faust namhaft gemacht werden konnte, setzt die Geschichte des "Faust"-Stoffes doch erst ein mit dem sogenannten "Volksbuch" von 1587. Dadurch wurde eine Tradition begründet, in der Goethes Faust gewiß den Höhepunkt darstellt. Aber auch nach Goethe hat man immer wieder auf das alte Faustbuch zurück gegriffen, weshalb es in diesem Seminar in seiner frühneuhochdeutschen Sprachgestalt einer gründlichen Lektüre unterzogen werden soll. Zudem werden solche epischen und dramatischen Werke behandelt, die direkt oder indirekt auf den Erstdruck von 1587 zurückgehen.
Die Kenntnis von Goethes Faust (Teil 1 und 2) wird bei allen Teilnehmerinnen und teilnehmern vorausgesetzt.
