This course is intended to provide the students with the basic understanding of mechanisms and regularities of languages change, as well as the possibilities and limitations of using this knowledge for establishing relationships between languages and for reconstruction of their common ancestors. The course is offered as a three-day seminar, four classes per day, which will combine lectures, classroom discussions and short written quizzes. Credits for this course will be given based on participation in discussions, the results of quizzes and/or a 10-15 pages course paper to be submitted within three months after the seminar.
