In dem Kurs soll Stifter als zentraler Vertreter des Frührealismus behandelt werden. Dazu wird die Entwicklung seiner "Studien" von den Erstfassungen bis zur Buchausgabe analysiert, um die Erzählverfahren und ihre Entwicklung zu kennzeichnen. Daraufhin werden die Bunten Steine sowie die späten Erzählungen auf dieser Grundlage behandelt, um schließlich zu den beiden Romanen Nachsommer und Witiko zu gelangen.
Es wäre wünschenswert, wenn die Teilnehmer vor Kursbeginn zumindest einige Texte von Stifter gelesen haben.
