Who is a refugee? When does a succesful asylum applicant become an international student? What is the difference between a high-skilled and a low-skilled migrant? Why can some migrants stay and others have to leave?
These are some of the questions that this seminar aims to address by analysing the impact of the categorisation of migrants according to the reasons for their move, their level of skills, their lenght of stay, their country of origin, and so on. We will have a look at different categories and dichotomies of migration and the impact of these classifications, both with respect to legal rights and social acceptance.
In migration research doubts about the analytical potential of migrant categories are increasingly raised. From a policy point of view, framings of migrants based on their categories might have serious effects on their life chances, for instance regarding access to the labour market, education and adequate housing. Therefore, understandings of migrant categories have become increasingly blurred, which might in turn have consequences for migration research and migration policies.
This seminar will be taught completely in English. Students should be willing to prepare the classes by reading the recommended literature and to actively participate in the discussions during the sessions.
