Das weltliche Theater hatte im Mittelalter einen sehr schweren Stand. Zu gründlich waren die Kirchenväter mit dem heidnischen Schauspiel und mit dem Theaterspielen überhaupt ins Gericht gegangen, als daß man problemlos an antike Traditionen hätte anknüpfen können. So ist es kein Zufall, daß vielerorts nur die Ausnahmezeit der Fastnacht eine Möglichkeit bot, etwas anderes "darzustellen", ohne daß dies als Lüge und damit als Sünde verurteilt worden wäre. Auf diese Weise wurde das Fastnachtsspiel zum Ursprung des "modernen" weltlichen Theaters.
Das Seminar untersucht die Themen und Gestaltungsformen der überlieferten Spiele vor allem am Beispiel Nürnbergs. Studierende, in deren Heimatstadt eine eigene Spieltradition existierte, können sich gern schwerpunktmäßig damit befassen.
