260022 Social Epistemology (S) (SoSe 2026)

Testimony is indispensable for the acquisition of much of the knowledge we possess. We of course acquire testimony through socially interacting with others. This means that there is an essential component of knowledge acquisition that is fundamentally social. This social side of epistemology raises its own set of interesting questions and phenomena, which this course aims to explore. We will spend significant time discussing the literature on epistemic injustice, which is concerned with understanding the ways in which our epistemic practices are unjust to those from marginalized groups. We will also discuss other topics, such as the nature of testimony, epistemic disagreement, and the epistemic analysis of conspiracy theories and social media.
