The Language, Gender and Pragmatic Variation course explores how gender shapes and is shaped by linguistic practices across diverse social and cultural contexts. In this seminar, students will engage with key theories and empirical research on the intersection of gender, language use and pragmatics, examining how meaning and identity are negotiated through everyday communication. Emphasis will be placed on understanding variation in speech acts, politeness, stance and discourse strategies across genders and communities. Throughout the semester, students will design and carry out small-scale research projects for the seminar, investigating real-world language data, and will showcase their findings and analytical insights.
