This seminar provides information on where to look for postdoctoral positions and academic positions, how to write a CV/resume and cover letter, and how to prepare for academic and industry interviews. On the first day, we focus on writing CVs/resumes and cover letters for academic and non-academic positions, but we also discuss other kinds of other application materials and where to find job announcements. On the second day, we discuss preparation for different kinds of interviews, interview questions, illegal questions, and the STAR method for answering behavioral-based questions. Then we hold mock interviews, with each participant playing the role of the candidate meeting with a "search committee". If time permits, we also discuss networking strategies.

Learning Results:

After successful participation in this course, participants will have

thoroughly studied how to tailor a cover letter and CV/resume for academic and non-academic positions;

prepared for job interviews by practicing in front of a "search committee";

learned the STAR method for answering behavioral-based questions;

practiced dealing with illegal and inappropriate questions;

learned some important differences between the US and UK educational systems and styles of writing;

discussed other application materials that are often required (such as research statements, teaching portfolios, writing samples, and letters of recommendation);
