Everyday Humanitarianism: Power, Aid & Refugee Lives explores how care, protection, and survival are arranged in daily life before, during, and after forced displacement. It highlights the practical assistance people provide each other and examines the roles of NGOs, donors, and governments. The course explores what constitutes humanitarianism beyond official agencies, examines how power, bureaucracy, and accountability shape systems of assistance, and demonstrates how refugees exercise agency, solidarity, and resistance while navigating everyday experiences, borders, and paperwork. By the end, students will be able to analyze everyday humanitarian practices using relevant theories and concepts, map power relations among communities, NGOs, donors, and the state, and critically evaluate common policy tools—such as needs assessments, targeting, and protection—against real-world experiences.
