In this student-led study group, we want to explore how the dangers of drug, alcohol, cigarette and e-cigarette use among young people can be addressed in the English L2 classroom through authentic media such as documentaries, newspaper articles, scientific texts, commentary formats and social media content. In this way, we aim to connect language learning with intercultural perspectives and health awareness. We see links to the curriculum in areas such as intercultural learning (youth culture and health issues in the USA and UK), communicative competence (discussions, debates, argumentative writing), media literacy (analysis of videos, commentary and articles) and raising awareness of prevention strategies.
The study group will combine short input phases with group work, in which participants analyse texts and media (e.g. documentaries, commentaries, articles) and then develop teaching ideas and materials that can be tried out and discussed together. Finally, we will reflect on how these ideas could be adapted for different types of schools and proficiency levels.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
