This course is intended for students who wish to expand their knowledge and use of academic English while at the same time learning about the popular culture landscape that in part produced the modern English we speak today. We will examine the rapidly changing world of popular culture in both the US and the UK in the decades after WWII, including popular music (and the youth culture associated with it) as well as art, design, film, television, and popular fiction. Students will practice their speaking and listening skills in class discussions, and their writing skills in several short reaction papers and Moodle posting board discussions. In order to gain points for the course students will be required to actively participate in class discussions as well as online (Moodle) work, and successfully complete a short presentation.
